Biomedical engineering is a branch of medicine that applies engineering principles in medicine for health reasons. This branch of medicine seeks to stand in the gap between medicine and engineering where engineering skills are applied in treatment and diagnosis of diseases and installation of medical equipment.

Biomedical science/engineering enterprise design

The Problem

Africa has an acute shortage of biomedical engineers. The industry operates without regulation or proper training.

Kenya's Ministry of Health reported that only 420 biomedical engineers worked in Kenyan public hospitals in 2016. Of these, only 10 had an undergraduate degree and higher diploma. About 140 bore the name medical engineering technologists with only diploma qualifications. The remaining 270 had certificates. These figures did not include the few that may have been hired by county governments.

Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya’s largest referral facility with 1,200 types of sophisticated medical equipment-both for urgent and selective surgeries-has only 24 biomedical engineers.

Biomedical engineers are crucial for not only diagnosis but also treatment particularly in machine-dependent treatments such as radiotherapy, surgery and dialysis.

World Health Organization's Recommendation

The World Health Organization (WHO) survey in 2009 reported that nine in ten of all African countries surveyed about medical device maintenance services had trouble finding engineers locally with proper qualifications. Among many other things, theWHO note absence of a national and professional regulatory bodies and lack of training.

Development of biomedical engineering training and practice is critical to achievement of global health. A strong biomedical engineering industry in Africa is necessary to achievement of health in Africa.

Kenyan Parliamentary Bill

The Kenyan parliament has proposed a biomedical engineering Bill twice; once in 2013, and again in 2015. The Bill sought creation of structures for oversight on the training, registration and licensing of biomedical engineers.

Your Role as a Participant

Your role as a participant in this value chain design group is to work with other group members to design an enterprise that transcends the entire value chain. A well constituted value chain design group must include:

  • Individiuals who design biomedical devices (e.g., physical planners, landscape architects, healthcare architects, visualization scientists, biomedical engineers, structural engineers, and the like)
  • Individuals who provide building materials to shelter the production (e.g., a biomedical engineering manufacturing facility)
  • Individuals who work in production of biomedical devices (e.g., biomedical engineers, biomedical technicians)
  • Individuals who work in supplies (e.g., suppliers of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, utilities, and the like)
  • Individuals who work in product marketing (e.g., visualization scientists, biomedical engineering products marketing groups, and the like)
  • Individuals who own retail stores (e.g., pharmacies, medical supplies retailers, and the like)
  • Individuals who provide development and construction capital (e.g., investment bankers, commercial bankers, mutual fund managers, and all other financial groups  interested in biomedical engineering financing)
  • Individuals who provide working capital (e.g., investment bankers, commercial bankers, mutual fund managers, and all other financial groups  interested in biomedical engineering financing)
  • Individuals who provide expert services (e.g., strategy consultants, design consultants, and the like) 

Each Value Chain Enterprise Design Group such constituted will engage to design a value chain based enterprise.

Criteria for Design Evaluation

  • The design must illustrate how you will source high quality inputs including.
    • Raw materials
    • Technologies
    • Finance
    • Human Resources
  • The design must clearly show the specific product that will drive the economy of the enterprise.
  • The design must illustrate a sustainable market for the specified product.
  • The emerging design must be organizational structure created with your team members to implement your newly designed enterprise and explain how you will manage its operation.
