Discover Opportunity for Agribusiness Enterprises in African countries

DESIGN CHAIR: DR. JULIET KIMEMIAH -- ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN WOMEN FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

afard

Many agribusiness organizations in Kenya and many African countries are inefficient and ineffectiveAgriculture, lifestock and fisheries business is uncoupled with the food and grocery markets in Kenya. Farm produce hardly finds its way to the organized retail systems. Kenyan farmers cannot find anywhere to sell their farm produce.

At the same time, Kenyan supermarkets are fulll of farm produce from foreign countries. A walk through supermarkets in Nairobi reveals fruits and vegetables from South Africa, Egypt, Tanzania, Netherlands, and Mexico. While Kenyan retailers stock produce from foreign countries, millions of metric tons of Kenyan farm produce is rotting away in Kenyan farms. As such, agribusiness in Kenya is extremely challenging for local farmers.

Opportunity

Better structured agribusiness enterprises will achieve efficiency in the marketplace. They will attract money to fund their capital projects and working budgets. With sufficient funding, they will become more competitive in the marketplace. Their farm produce will reach market effectively. They will develop core competencies in their farming practice and provide hundreds of high quality jobs for young people. They will provide tidy returns to their investors.

Participants in Agribusiness Enterprise Design Group will work to discover business opportunities in this sector in emerging market in Africa.

Examples of agribusiness enterprises may include, but not limited to:

  • land owning companies
  • land leasing companies
  • farm imput companies
  • veterinary services companies
  • farm produce collection and transportation companies
  • farm produce value-addition and processing companies
  • farm produce retail companies
  • etc.
