People of Nyeri and their Culture

by Michael Herbert Kimani

Most of the people inhabiting Nyeri are Kikuyu. This is because they were the major community which settled in central Kenya during their immigration to Kenya during 1,200-1,600 AD. During settling down they became enemies with the neighboring Maasai and engaged in constant raids and wars with them. Despite this they interacted with other communities and as a result adopted the practice of the age-set system and circumcision from the neighboring cushite communities.

Mount Kenya was one of the major shrines for the Agikuyu people who lived in Nyeri. It was called Kirinyaga which means shining mountain.  However, due to interactions with British missionaries most Nyeri residents converted to Christianity which explains the presence of a variety of Christian faiths in the area, for example: Presbyterian, Methodist, catholic, Anglican Pentecostal and Akorinos. A small portion of the population mostly found in towns prophesy to Muslim and Hindu religions.

Tourism and agriculture form the backbone of the economy of the Nyeri people. This is because Nyeri is endowed with fertile soils and abundant rainfall which favours crop farming. Examples of crops Nyeri people grow are tea and coffee which are mainly grown for export. Nyeri residents also engage in horticulture farming, dairy farming and fish farming.

Lastly, Nyeri is the birth place of notable personalities in Kenya. Such personalities include the Nobel peace prize winner, Prof. Wangari Maathai, former president of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki and marathon medalist Catherine Ndereba.
