Discover Opportunity for Pharmaceutical Enterprises in African Countries

Attaractiveness of an industry and competitive conditions are the main sources of challenges. The pharmaceutical industry plays a key role in the health sector in provision of drugs, innovative treatment of diseases through research and dissemination of medical information.

Some of the challenges experienced by companies owned by individuals include parallel importation, counterfeits, the possibility of an international franchiser appointing a competing franchisee.

This has posed a serious competitive challenge to local pharmaceutical companies. Most have had to use other models of doing business in order to remain competitive in the Kenyan market.

Another major competitive challange in the industry stems form exposure of most original/brand products to generics that are cheaper and available to a better part of the Kenyan population. Many multinational companies have pulled out of Kenya at the entry of cheaper generics.

Other challenges in pharmaceutical market include: reduced purchasing power, entry of health management organizations (HMOs), reduced growth rate, increased competition, consumer awareness, pressure of pricing especially in government tenders. These challenges have resulted to cut-throat competition and reduced profits.

Opportunity

Better structured pharmaceutical enterprises will achieve efficiency in the marketplace. They will attract money for funding their capital projects and working budgets. With sufficient funding, they will provide better services to health consumers. Their services will be of highest quality achievable. They will develop core competencies in their practice and provide hundreds of high quality jobs for professional staff. They will provide tidy returns to their investors.

Participants in Pharmaceutical Enterprise Design Group will work to discover business opportunities in pharmaceutical sector in emerging market in Africa.

Examples of pharmaceutical enterprises may include, but not limited to:

  • Pharmaceutical research and development enterprises
  • Active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) manufacturers.
  • Pharma companies making generic drugs.
  • Patent manufacturing enterprises
  • Pharmaceutical testing labs for bioequivalence, bioinformatics, and clinical trials
  • Contract research and manufacturing enterprises.
  • Clinical research management enterprises.
  • Intellectual property enterprises

  • Individuals who work in production (e.g., pharmaceutical scientists, formulation scientists, pharmaceutical technicians).
  • Individuals who work in supplies in hospitals, pharmacy stores, health centers and clinics.
  • Individuals who work in product marketing in hospitals, pharmacy stores, health centers and clinics.
